Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival brings New German Cinema to Estonian cinemas
Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival (PÖFF) announces the Goethe-Institut Presents: New German Cinema programme, to be screened at this year’s very special 25th birthday edition of the festival. A total of 11 films will appear as part of the side programme, including one each competing in the main Official Selection, First Feature and Rebels with a Cause programmes.
The multiple-award-winning Andreas Kleinart’s Dear Thomas comes to Black Nights’ Official Selection for its international premiere after first screening in Munich. Sarah Blaskiewitz’s Precious Ivie will compete for the First Feature prize. Director Blaskiewitz and lead actress Lorna Ishema are both part of German Film’s Face to Face talent promotion this year. Shadow Hour won the 2021 First Steps Award for first time director Benjamin Martins.
Among the other German films in the lineup, Whispers of War featured in the festivals’ PÖFF Goes To Cannes Works-in-Progress showcase at the Marché du Film this summer. Great Freedom competed in the Un Certain Regard programme in Cannes and is Austria’s entry for the Best International Film at the 94th Academy Awards. The full programme also includes I’m Your Man from Maria Schrader, Lena Stahl’s My Son, Night Forest by André Hörmann (part of the Just Film Children & Youth sub-festival), Le prince from Lisa Bierwirth, The Last Execution from Franziska Stünkel, and Maria Speth’s Mr Bachmann and His Class, as part of the DOC@PÖFF programme.
The Goethe-Institut Estland is one of PÖFF’s longest standing international partners, having supported the screenings of hundreds of films and the attendance of German guests for more than two decades. PÖFF will have the honour of hosting at least seven of the programme’s directors in Tallinn this year. Ulrich Ribbert, Director of the Goethe-Institut Estland, commented on this year’s collaboration that, "PÖFF and the Goethe-Institut Estland have cooperated successfully for more than 20 years to show the whole versatility of German cinema to Estonian audiences. We are delighted to celebrate PÖFF’s anniversary by presenting a selection of outstanding films from Germany – two of them have previously taken part in work-in-progress-initiatives of the festival. It’s a pleasure to have them back for their nordic premieres."
Ticket sales for the Goethe-Institut Presents: New German Cinema programme will open on November 5.
