TV Series: the Narrative Revolution

2-day masterclass on serial screenwriting by Nicola Lusuardi

12-13 July, 2024
Nordic Hotel Forum, Tallinn

Nicola’s masterclass covers a range of topics starting with developing a serial mindset and analysing specificities of serial storytelling. He lists the main serial institutions and their paradigms - character, arena, catalogue, plot - and asks the questions: What are they, how do they work, and why is it fundamental to master them during the creative process? He goes on to explain what “driven” means in serial storytelling, and divides the serial works into four categories: catalogue-, arena-, character-, and plot-driven. Nicola also touches on the mindset in writing - what do we write when we write a scene, and describes the style of the best contemporary series scripts. He delves into what it means to develop a serial concept, analyses what determines the specific relatonship between topic and theme in a series, and explains how and why starting from the same idea a correct but uneffective series or a powerful and memorable one can be created. The masterclass will end on the technical differences between good local content, good global content… and masterpieces.
