Mastering Virtual Production for Independent Producers

Mastering Virtual Production for Independent Producers

Industry@Tallinn & Baltic Event Atelier Presents: Masterclass Series: Mastering Virtual Production for Independent Producers

Overview

Virtual production, encompassing real-time production techniques like ICVFX, has reshaped the landscape of film and series production by merging LED screens, camera tracking systems, and high-resolution playback systems. This innovative process allows creators to visualize and shoot in otherwise impossible locations, achieve intricate shots minus the green screen, and optimize time and expenses for projects. But how pertinent is virtual production for independent producers from smaller countries and limited budgets, as opposed to its traditional use in large-scale studio or streaming productions?

The Industry@Tallinn & Baltic Event Virtual & Real-Time Production Atelier masterclass aims to demystify virtual, real-time, and ICVFX processes specifically for independent filmmakers and film industry professionals from all professions from development to on set and support services. It explores how independent filmmakers and producers, as well as crew members and service providers can harness these technologies for their benefit. This intensive two-day masterclass, supported by the Creative Europe Media program, is designed for beginner to mid-level producers and audiovisual professionals, offering a hands-on approach to its application within the independent film industry.

Objective

Participants will develop a thorough understanding of virtual production from initial concept to on-set execution and post-production integration. The focus is on practical application, moving beyond the hype to identify where technologies like game engines, LED volumes, real-time workflows, and the latest AI tools deliver real benefits for independent projects—be it enabling 'impossible' locations, streamlining complex scenes, enhancing creative iteration, or optimizing budgets.

Target Audience

This masterclass is ideal for independent film producers, line producers, production managers, and other audiovisual professionals including service providers seeking foundational and intermediate knowledge of virtual production principles, without requiring prior expertise in VP.

Key Topics Include

  • Benefits and disadvantages of virtual production vs. on-location shoots
  • Basics of virtual production: Core technologies and approaches
  • VP workflow: Post-production in pre-production
  • Budgeting and planning for virtual production
  • On-set VP: Crews and processes
  • Case studies and hands-on assignments
