Outstanding short “The Best Fireworks Ever” (rewarded in Cannes in 2017) inspired us impatiently wait for Aleksandra Terpińska’s debut feature, which is a brilliant jewel. She ambitiously flows to the beat of hip-hop and rhymes all dialogues in rap rhythms. This fresh incredible drama energetically mixes the daily routines of unhappy people with expressive freestyle rapping. The joyless citizens of cold Warsaw mumble like battle rappers in one continuous a capella song and we follow their unreachable dreams while swinging non-stop.
Wannabe underground rapper Kamil (profilic young talent Jacek Beler has worked with director since “The Best Fireworks Ever”) dreams to record his first hip-hop album, but even his social media addict girlfriend Anecia (Magdalena Koleśnik from “Sweat”) has no faith in his efforts. Superbly rich lady Iwona (recipient of Polish Eagle Sonia Bohosiewicz for “Rezerwat”) has everything that she possibly dreamed, but is too bored to continue luxury games on a trophy wife’s playground. Kamil still lives on his mother’s caring shoulders and meets desperate Iwona for steamy bang encounters without a single drop of love. Everyone needs a different perspective to evaluate life’s tracks, gifts, kicks, punches and traps.
Wonderful lyricist Aleksandra gained confidence assisting Wojciech Smarzowski, who is invited for PÖFF’s Official Selection with “The Wedding Day”, and bravely kicks a rhyme to catch the beat. She is powerful. She is fire. Boom!
