Set high in the mountains, fall comes to an end and a family prepares for the long winter ahead.

Mike (Fred Hechinger) is on the verge of adulthood when his mother (Caitríona Balfe) disappears without a trace during the first snowstorm of the season. Together with his father (Ebon Moss-Bachrach), he sets out to find her. But as days turn into weeks, the two realise she may never return. While Mike struggles with his own identity, his reserved father finds it difficult to talk about his feelings.

Set against the stunning backdrop of the Rocky Mountains, Andrew Haigh (“45 Years”, “All of Us Strangers”) tells a sensitive family drama about the difficult search for a new way of living together.

Juxtaposing the claustrophobia of the cabin with the vast expanse of the Rockies, “A Long Winter” feels both close and distant – a story from another time with echoes of familiar struggles.
