This year, Delfi Meedia has joined as a significant media partner of the Black Nights Film Festival (PÖFF). However, this is not their first collaboration, as PÖFF has been the platform for the premiere of Delfi Meedia's sports documentaries for three consecutive years. "It’s both an honour and a challenge, a responsibility as well. PÖFF has opened a door to a world of creativity and uniqueness for our journalists and readers," says Delfi’s Editor-in-Chief, Urmo Soonvald.
Soonvald recalls many memorable moments from PÖFF, such as last year’s opening film Guardians of the Formula (directed by Dragan Bjelogrlić), which brought unknown facets of recent history to light with masterful storytelling. It taught us about the impact and internal conflicts of humanity, highlighting the endless struggle against oppressive regimes.
What ties Delfi and PÖFF together are shared values such as courage, ambition, and a boundless outreach, along with a sense of humanity and empathy for the vulnerable. Soonvald notes that PÖFF has always been characterised by sustainability, progress, ability to surprise, and professionalism – qualities that Delfi hopes to continue honing and developing in partnership with PÖFF.
Why is Delfi supporting the cultural sector today?
"Estonian culture must always be supported. This necessity and inevitability are best understood in challenging times, whether due to domestic or international reasons. Sadly, culture, like independence, is not something we can take for granted. It requires constant effort and attention. The past three years have shown the inevitability of life as a fragile and unpredictable phenomenon. Yet challenging times also present an opportunity for culture to improve its role and resilience," says Soonvald.
Delfi as a film
We asked what kind of film could be made about Delfi Meedia. The answer? It would be a drama, viewed from multiple angles. It would make you laugh, think, cry, and learn, but most importantly, it would leave you wanting to watch it again tomorrow because it’s so addictive!
