The competition program includes 11 features, including 8 world premieres and 3 international premieres. The counterpart of the PÖFF Shorts sub-festival, Rebels With Their Shorts, consists of 12 works, including two world premieres.
Rebels With A Cause competition strand showcases films that experiment with form and rebel against conventional filmmaking tropes or political ideas. Launched in 2017, the competition strand has become increasingly popular with festival audiences.
The competition's main curator, Javier Garcia Puerto, commented: "In the Rebels programme we don't challenge the audience, but we are dedicated to the audience that dares to challenge itself. There are as many styles as filmmakers want to try and practice. And we push those boundaries: from documentaries that cross over into fiction and grip you like a thriller, to bold, satirical political statements, including drug lord sagas that are colourful and surprising. Get ready for the adventure: all this ride is for the brave and devoted audiences who want to try how cinema can be more personal, unique and daring.
PÖFF Shorts programmer, Laurence Boyce adds about Rebels With Their Shorts: "In the face of an absurd world, an absurd response is to be expected. Sometimes satirical, sometimes shocking, contemplative or confrontational, these films are always thought provoking."
