The Iranian actress based in France, whose international career began with Ridley Scott’s blockbuster Body of Lies, will present her latest film Oh, What Happy Days at the Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival (PÖFF).
In this unusual film by Homayoun Ghanizadeh, Farahani plays an Iranian actress forced to make a video call to her family living in exile — a call that ignites long-suppressed tensions and escalates into a sharp confrontation.
Oh What Happy Days marks a historic moment: for the first time on screen, Iranian actors living inside the country perform alongside those who left for political reasons.
Premiering in PÖFF’s Critics’ Picks competition programme, the film screens on Saturday, 15 November at 18:30 at Apollo Kino Plaza.
Golshifteh Farahani will also discuss her latest role and her career at a public press conference on 15 November at 14:00 in the Sirius conference hall at Nordic Hotel Forum.
She and director Homayoun Ghanizadeh — already known to Estonian audiences from his 2010 theatre production Antigone— will be interviewed by PÖFF programme curator Nikolaj Nikitin.
Farahani has appeared in nearly 60 films and series, including Jim Jarmusch’s Paterson, Eva Husson’s Girls of the Sun, Asghar Farhadi’s About Elly, Hiner Saleem’s My Sweet Pepper Land, as well as Hollywood productions such as Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales and Exodus: Gods and Kings.
Forced to leave Iran in 2008 after violating religious and cultural taboos, Farahani is also known as a human rights activist and a vocal supporter of the Women, Life, Freedom movement.
