Up Again
What remains of a young athlete when the results fall short?
Barbora Vránková has just been crowned Czech figure-skating champion. The title should be only the beginning, but instead, it is followed by a period of doubt, setbacks and withdrawal from competition. The relentless training continues, her grades show no mercy, and the question is no longer about medals, but whether – and how – she can return to elite sport without losing herself along the way. The camera follows her journey over several years, uncovering what truly lies behind the medals and potential success.
Director Eliška Cílková is a composer by training, and in her new film, she demonstrates that sound is just as vital as visual language. Her camera remains masterfully positioned in the rink and at competitions, observing without interfering or passing judgement. Thus, the sports documentary evolves into a subtle coming-of-age story. Ultimately, a central question emerges: what happens to a young person in an environment where their worth is measured solely by results, and how does their relationship with success and failure evolve?
