The Beloved
Sorogoyen returns with his unique mastery of emotional tension with a powerful family drama starring Javier Bardem.
When legendary filmmaker Esteban (Javier Bardem) offers his estranged actress daughter Emilia (Victoria Luengo) a part in his upcoming historical epic, she hesitantly agrees despite her misgivings. The two haven’t seen one another in more than a decade, and she knows that any potential collaboration is likely to be quite fraught. Still, the prestigious role is too enticing to pass up, and Esteban’s manipulative charms prove too convincing to resist. Yet, as soon as father and daughter arrive on set for the shoot, tensions begin to percolate.
“The Beloved” is a bracing, blistering examination of familial dysfunction festering under the pressures of an arduous production. Bardem delivers a fiery tour-de-force performance that is matched by Luengo’s roiling depths as the film hurtles toward an unforgettable confrontation that pushes the characters to their breaking point.
The film was in the main competition at the Cannes Film Festival.
