Storm
What does dying mean? Ten-year-old Storm and his younger brother Ulrik know the answer. It is something that happened to their father. After the death of her husband, Elin is trying to maintain family traditions as a single mother, and these include going fishing at a certain spot, which the three of them undertake on one fine day. Only mother and daughter return.
Little brother Ulrik drowned in front of his sister who does not remember anything of the incident due to the trauma. The mother has to carry the memory images in their destructive pain alone in her heart to protect her daughter and herself from the truth. Elin simply does not ask herself or others the questions behind which the truth is hiding. She only gives answers. The right ones – the ones which Storm can give to police investigators.
“Storm” maps the boundaries of innocence and irresponsibility, and with raw honesty places the breaking points of unconditional love under a magnifying glass. Director Erika Calmeyer’s debut film flings her in a high arc up to the arena of star filmmakers. This original and powerful film, created as a very strong integral whole, is striking in all its creative aspects, from the script that relentlessly runs at the edge of tension to the excellent actor performances, which in turn are brought to the viewers through deeply meaningful camera direction that opens the psychological state of the characters.
