SHORTS NEW TALENTS COMPETITION: LIVE ACTION

In a year where it has felt like time has stood still, PÖFF Shorts looks to the future with the New Talents Competition - a category exclusive to student films, presenting the next generation of filmmaking talent and the burgeoning voices of tomorrow.

From relationship dramas to body horrors; dystopian futures to mundane work lives; anger, heartbreak and injustice to humour, beauty and connection.

The programmes on offer are indeed eclectic, but the films that make them all share the trait of being singular, bold stories, told with personality, convention-challenging vigour and a deep sense of humanity coarsing through their veins.

Whilst the world of cinema currently fights daily battles to ensure its survival, these programmes celebrate the work of emerging filmmakers, and hopefully act as a remedy, a reminder and a resounding affirmation that we all have plenty to look forward to.

There's still fight left in us yet.

A film about a visiting NRI couple, specifically the wife after whom the film takes its title. She’s gotten herself an internship. She’s thrilled. She thinks it’s the start of big things. But first, she wants her husband to break the news, casually, to her very conservative parents – so it will seem like he is totally okay with it. He seems supportive initially, but soon things happen that make Anita wonder if life in New York, with an “NRI husband”, is any better than life back home.

Settling the Score

Poland

Genre
/mängufilm/

The film tells a story of elderly woman Halina (Jadwiga Jankowska-Cieslak), who makes a difficult decision and stands up for justice and her own dignity. Settling the score is an attempt to address the problem of marginalization of elderly people’s needs and their quality of life. In its form, the film is consistent and well thought through. It allows the viewer to freely interpret the plot and bitterness of its humorous finale.
