Rebels with a Cause

The very best works of art push boundaries. They dare us to think about the world in which we live. They challenge our traditional views. They show us that there are more things in heaven and Earth.

The shorts in the Rebels With A Cause programme embody these ideals with their bold and provocative techniques. But while these films often revel in the surrealistic, it is perhaps appropriate – in a time in which the real world often seems to be nonsensical – that they deal with many important and pressing issues of the day..

These films will take part in Rebels With A Cause, a competition section of the Black Nights Film Festival dedicated to films that defy the traditional modes of filmmaking. The selection provides a mixture of new filmmakers who will lead the way in cinema over the coming years and more established talents.

Each short will be eligible for the honorific prize of Best Rebels Short chosen by the Rebels With A Cause jury members.

Filmed on 16mm film, this visual expression is rooted in archival materials, drawing its inspiration from a poem by Hans Magnus Enzensberger. It speaks of forgotten people, their lives and their deeds. These two Archives were found at a flea market in Zagreb. One is of a famous architect and the other of a famous composer. The film ponders on this occurrence, as well as on the vanishing and forgetfulness of humans.

Rebels with a Cause

We’re in no name suburbia. Harriet is 17, a misfit rich kid, star of her high school cross-country team, but currently, refusing to cross the finish line. She lies to her friends. She fakes suicide. It’s all a deflection – her only parent is on his deathbed and she can't say goodbye. Combine that with the looming reality that her acid-tongued half-sister will soon be her only family, this is one of those times in life when you decide who you are. Someone who faces up or someone who runs away. Then she finds a hair in her jello. Her best friend calls her a coward. A bird craps on her head. Something shifts.
