Klokkenluider
When a gentle government official discovers terrible secrets, he knows he has a duty towards the rest of the world. But life as a whistleblower is not easy. Hiding in a secluded Belgian holiday home, he and his Dutch wife anxiously await the arrival of a journalist in the company of two eccentric bodyguards.
What follows is an edgy black comedy, sharply scripted and elegantly constructed by actor turned director Neil Maskell. A veteran of the UK independent film scene, Maskell is well known for his collaborations with British director Ben Wheatley (Kill List) who is the executive producer of the film. The influences are clear as this directorial debut carries some of Wheatley’s black humour, the typical awkwardness of his characters and the uneasy oddity of their circumstances.
The film shines with a performance by Tom Burke in the role of a clumsy bodyguard. Maskell and his producers have managed to snatch a last performance by the British star before his rise to fame makes him impossible to get for independent films. Enjoy!
Malaika Bova
Neil Maskell is an English actor, writer and director who is known for his appearances in British crime and horror films such as "The Football Factory" and "Kill List". He began acting as a teenager, making his television debut in "The Bill" and has appeared in several populist dramas such as "Casualty" and "Soldier Soldier". On stage he has worked with the Traverse Theatre in Edinburgh and made his film debut in 1997 in "Nil By Mouth". In 2011 he was nominated as Best Actor by the British Independent Film Awards for his role in the British movie "Kill List". "Klokkenluider" is his directorial film debut.
