Honey Bunch
An eerie Canadian body horror film about secrets and violence in close relationships.
Diana’s (Grace Glowicki) attentive and devoted husband, Homer (Ben Petrie), has taken her from her hospital bed to a remote experimental trauma retreat. After an accident left her with crippling pain and memory loss, this might be their last hope that she’ll get better. Farah (Kate Dickie), Diana’s personal physician, promises that with the use of Dr. Tréphine’s cutting-edge therapies and with Homer’s helping hand, she will make a full recovery – she’ll feel like her old self again. Homer is enthusiastic about her progress, but the more treatment she undergoes the less Diana feels like herself. When the ritualistic exercises intensify, Diana experiences haunting visions and begins to notice strange changes in her husband’s behaviour.
Sims-Fewer and Mancinelli’s (Violation, 2020) twisted sophomore feature is a love letter to classic 70s thrillers that transforms into a wholly original take on the ideas of love, loss, and devotion. Combining a 70s aesthetic, an unsettling mystery, and embodied performances, "Honey Bunch" is an electric, surprising, and ultimately moving psychological thriller that weaves a sinister and sometimes grotesque story about the meaning of commitment.
The film premiered as part of the Berlinale Special programme at the Berlin International Film Festival.
