Father's House
They escaped a controlling Christian sect. Now acclaimed actors bring the horrors of their past back to life.
In 1990s Denmark, Faderhuset grew from a charismatic Christian church into a tightly controlled community where faith dominated every part of its followers’ lives. Years later, former members return to those memories in an extraordinary cinematic experiment. Acclaimed actors including Trine Dyrholm, David Dencik and Emma Sehested Høeg recreate scenes from their past, while those who lived through them advise the performers, share their memories and watch as some of their most traumatic experiences unfold before them.
Moving between high-end dramatic reconstruction and the testimonies of those who escaped, “Father’s House” explores the fragile boundary between faith and control in an extraordinary world of exorcism, speaking in tongues and militant Christianity.
Intimate, deeply unsettling and formally inventive, the film reaches beyond one religious community to examine the mechanisms of manipulation that shape our relationships, our beliefs and the world around us. What makes us believe, obey and need to belong, and how do we recognise when influence becomes control?
