Everytime
A grieving mother and her daughter’s boyfriend grapple with guilt, grief and forgiveness whilst on holiday together.
Shortly before a planned trip to Spain, 14-year-old Jessie (Carla Hüttemann) sneaks off to see her boyfriend, Lux – with tragic consequences. A year later, her mother, Ella (Birgit Minichmayr), is trying to find her way back to a normal life with her younger daughter, Melli (Lotte Shirin Keiling). When Lux reenters their lives, old wounds are reopened. As they grapple with guilt and forgiveness, the unlikely trio sets off for Tenerife. Between Berlin and the shimmering Tenerife sun, memories and the present become inextricably intertwined.
A distant past is brought back to life in Sandra Wollner’s dizzying meditation on grief. Through digital traces and singularly memorable images bathed in the glow of perpetual sunset, “Everytime” becomes a haunting testament to the enduring spirit of those who leave us too soon.
This exquisite feature debut took home the prestigious Un Certain Regard award at this year’s Cannes Film Festival. Everytime has been selected as Germany’s entry for the Academy Award for Best International Feature Film.
