Everything Will Be Alright
After the provocative fiction drama “Lovable” director Staņislavs Tokalovs strikes with truly a courageous and frank observational documentary, shot over the past four years. This extremely personal film follows his family during rapid historical changes in Latvia. The 90-year-old grandmother Ina gradually loses her memory but questionable 9th of May rituals are still sacred for the proud veteran of WWII. Mother Irina is stuck between the ailing Ina and distancing husband Raul, who candidly refuses to celebrate two New Year’s Eves and prefers to end displeasing traditions of the shady past. Younger sister Patricija is a child of Latvian Independence with absolutely different values.
The Russian-speaking family has lived in Riga for more than 30 years and never bothered to learn Latvian. Staņislavs is torn to unite the alienated dysfunctional family and raises hard questions of prime importance on the intersection of choices. Which side will they choose when a full-scale War starts in Ukraine? He doesn’t judge his closest relatives but patiently awaits their reaction.
