Drive My Car
Yusuke Kafuku, a stage actor and director is happily married to Oto, a screenwriter. However, Oto suddenly dies after leaving behind a secret. Two years later, Kafuku, still unable to fully cope with the loss of his wife, receives an offer to direct a play at a theatre festival and drives to Hiroshima with his car. There, he meets Misaki, a reticent woman assigned to become his chauffeur. As they spend time together, Kafuku confronts the mystery of his wife that quietly haunts him.
Expanding upon renowned author Haruki Murakami’s short story of the same name, filmmaker Ryusuke Hamaguchi (Asako I & II) creates a vast cinematic journey filled with mystery, passion, surprise, and heartbreak. With a powerful, reserved performance from a rueful Nishijima that acts as a mirror to Miura’s surging regret and anger, "Drive My Car" is Hamaguchi’s most ambitious and accomplished film yet.
The film was nominated by Japan for the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film.
