Dawning
After tragedy pulls them apart, three sisters return to their childhood retreat.
Three sisters travel to their family’s vacation home for a getaway after the youngest’s latest suicide attempt. They are looking to withdraw from all unnecessary stress in the city to help Kristine recover and reconnect with herself. Family tensions rise, and what begins as an idyllic retreat for introspection and personal analysis is disturbed with the arrival of a mysterious man on their property.
Director Patrik Syversen (“Manhunt”, 2008) plays with themes of isolation and fear, turning the stunning and picturesque landscape of Norway’s remote forests into a haunting and eerie backdrop for senseless violence. He expertly conveys a feeling of unease in a seemingly calm environment, contrasting with a nonchalant voice-over narration that casually and occasionally comes to lay the grounds for this sordid tale.
“Dawning” is a visceral, unnerving thriller that lingers long after the credits roll, disturbing and shaking the audience to its core.
