Opening Ceremony

Black Nights Film Festival’s formal opening ceremony takes place on Friday the 3rd of November at 7 pm at Alexela Concert Hall. This year, in addition to the fancy photo shoot, ceremony and opening film, several special surprises await the guests. The program is longer and more exciting. Come and celebrate the start of one of the most important cultural events of the year!

The PÖFF wolf has been gathering energy throughout the year to bring audiences closer to the film world again. The festival's opening ceremony begins with an audiovisual performance in which the PÖFF wolf throws off its usual coat and invites people to dive into the waters of international cinema to be inspired and create new meanings in their lives. Whether the touch of the PÖFF is gentle and soft or bold and immersive is up to You!

The PÖFF Lifetime Achievement Award and Bruno O'Ya Stipend will be presented at the ceremony.

Ingmar Jõela will be hosting the event.

The gala will also feature the visual art project “Murals”, which exposes viewers to the devastation of the war in Ukraine. The piece follows Banksy’s street art left in the wreckage of homes, schools and other infrastructure. The audio-visual experience uses state-of-the-art 3D scanning solutions. The project was initiated by 3D artist Artem Ivanenko from Irpin, Ukraine. The directors are Artem Ivanenko, Alex Topaller, and Dan Shapiro.

The authors of the audiovisual work of the opening ceremony:
Director and screenwriter Siim Tõniste
Visual artist Taavi Varm
Sound designer Markus Andreas
Producer and creative director Kristiina Tinnu Tang

The ceremony is followed by the festival’s opening film “Guardians of the Formula”. The thriller by Serbian director Dragan Bjelogrlić is based on the little-known true story of Yugoslavia’s secret nuclear project, which got out of control. Also called the Serbian “Oppenheimer”, the film launches this year’s Focus Programme dedicated to the cinema of Serbia, Croatia, Slovenia, Montenegro, and North Macedonia.

After the opening film, guests will have a rare opportunity to celebrate the official launch of the 27th Black Nights Film Festival right on the concert hall stage! The opening gala afterparty is sponsored by Campari.
