Jean-Stéphane Bron is a Swiss documentary filmmaker born in Lausanne in 1969. He is known for his political documentaries which use a personal tone to deal with important subjects of our period: economic crises, the rise of populism, the crisis of democracy. In form, his films aim to create characters using dramaturgical codes which are similar to those of fiction. His films have received numerous awards in Europe and the United States. Among them are "Connu de nos services" (Known to Our Departments) (1997) which addressed the Swiss federal Police secret files scandal of the 1970s-80s; "Le Génie helvétique" (Corn in Parliament) (2003), a great box office success for Swiss cinema which looked at the works of a parliamentary commission in charge of a Law on genetic engineering; and "L’Expérience Blocher" (The Blocher Experience) (2013), a portrait of the billionaire and national-populist leader Christoph Blocher, which triggered enormous controversy. With "Cleveland contre Wall Street" (Cleveland Versus Wall Street) (2010), a film on the subprime crisis, presented at the Directors' Fortnight during the Cannes Film Festival and nominated for a Cesar award in France, Jean-Stéphane Bron won the Swiss Film Award in the Best Documentary category for the second time. His last film, "L’Opéra" (The Paris Opera) (2017), which received critical and public acclaim, was widely shown around the world, in Europe (France, Germany, Austria, Belgium, Italy, Switzerland, Ukraine), in Russia, in Asia (South Korea, Japan), in Brazil, the United States, and Quebec.
