Night Accident

Night Accident, "Tunku Kyrsyk"

World Premiere

Synopsis

Director

Temirbek Birnazarov’s brand new film is based on a story from Talip Ibraimov’s collection „The Old man and the Angel“. Angels can be heralds of positive or negative messages. „Night Accident“ has two main characters: the old man (Akolbek Abdõkalõkov) and the girl (Dina Jakob). The old man is alone, humiliated and despised. He is on his way to kill the man, who broke up his family and destroyed his life, but has an accident – he hits a girl. The old man takes her home and starts to treat her wounds.

Gradually we see the old man’s soul opening that is in fact very beautiful, noble and helpful. He falls in love. His dream has been to swim across a lake. The girl encourages him to do that and thus puts back the meaning into his life. In the key scene the old man confesses that without the girl he would probably have become a murderer.

The film progresses quietly, in a dignified rhythm. The duet of the old man and the girl has been played with minimalistic means and is just superb. The director has succeeded with few mediums in telling a simple and tangible story and reached thereby the wider philosophical generalizations about how chance can play a significant role in our lives – it is a thin, almost nonexistent line, where one person can become a murderer and the other a saint. At the end of the film the viewer is left with a cleansed feeling that is a testament to a masterpiece.
