PÖFF Recommends

"I was hungry for movies but now I'm just hungry!" – Anonymous moviegoer

PÖFF continues the tradition of partnering with local restaurants and cafe's to cater to every wolf's culinary needs. Let's be honest, with the arrival of PÖFF we find ourselves less at home more living a wandering fast-paced cosmopolitan lonely wolf lifestyle – a movie at lunch, coffee with a friend, working on something on your laptop with an important face, back to the cinema, dinner, late-night screening and lastly a soothing cocktail. This booklet is a trusty guide for you in these hectic times. Here are the carefully chosen culinary nests and stops where you can find various discounts by showing your festival pass or ticket. All the establishments hold pure tastes in high regard and aspire to reach the pantheon of memorable sensory experiences. All our PÖFF volunteers' meals this year are taken care of by Reval Cafe, who also offer a discount for all the weary eyes just for 1 euro in all of their cafes!

Whoever feels like refreshing themselves with a drink and exchanging movie experiences can join us in our "night zone" spots: Paar Veini, August, Butterfly Lounge, Parrot, Whisper Sister.

Reval Café's long-standing loyal customer Liisi Koikson recommends:

The café lifestyle is my secret pleasure, for both working and relaxing. Living in London, a quiet corner at a café was just the right place where to gather my thoughts and where I wrote down lyrics for many a song before having to return to the hustle and bustle of people.
In Tallinn, that place is Reval Café. I think it's like a cosy chameleon that senses its surroundings and transforms itself according to that. In the Old Town Reval, you can sit in a soft red armchair and listen to the best jazz records while drinking coffee. Telliskivi Reval is ideal for busy people and you can have a good quick lunch there. It doesn't matter in which corner of Tallinn Reval Café sets up shop, loyal customers will always find them to see what else they've got up their sleeve. As a lover of cafés, I find myself frequently sitting in Reval and taking a small moment to write down inspired thoughts or just resting my feet while having a cuppa.

The homely atmosphere, delicious food and friendly service always takes me back to Italy.

FLAMM: is its own world. Like a movie. Time stops when I step through the door. (Or is it me who forgets about the time?) But even before, already at the door, the smell of fresh-baked goods greets me – offering a glimpse of what's soon to come. In a small place like this, the people are put in the forefront, both the hosts and their guests. I let the hosts take care of me and they do a brilliant job. They respect both the food and their guests. I experience a subtle realisation that I've been cared for. Was it the curious glance from the head chef, silently asking “How's the food?” Or my own glance at the other patrons – all exuding joy and contentment.
FLAMM: is a cosy place with a lot of soul. It's just big enough. Charming in its simplicity. Everything is made to shine the spotlight on it's main star – the tarte flambée is superb. Pure flavours, elegant form. The thoughtful selection of wine is in playful harmony with the eponymous hero.
I leave with a smile on my face. This was experience that I am already subconsciously planning to recreate. In my head, I am sending out invitations to people with whom I'd love to share this new experience. Let's meet at FLAMM:!

There's plenty that other places can learn from Leib, and offering a matching glass of wine with each dish is one. Their whisky selection, put together with the Scottish Club, is very special. The place is named Men in Kitchen. The service is nice and friendly, the atmosphere is cozy and the location is good. Woohoo! If only it were closer to my home!
It's always important to me that there aren't a million different dishes on the menu as it would mean that there's hope that the food on the menu is made 100% with love and soul.
My favourites were the green pancakes with two fish roe because I love roe!
Anyhow, good place, worthy of my recommendation – I especially recommend the starters for two, the lamb and the rhubarb cocktail of course!

Nordic Hotel Forum is the home of Estonia’s most important cultural events. In the spring, during Tallinn Music Week, and in the autumn for the Film Festival, the Lobby Bar creates the feeling of having stumbled into Cannes. The diverse group of people, innumerable meetings and reunions; a true epicentre of European creativity. The Lobby bar’s menu of light meals is in step with their world class-food serving restaurant Monaco. Their superb grilled prawn and avocado wrap is the reason I organise half of my meetings just here! Not to mention – the best service and the most helpful people; always fast, always smiling.

If you want to go to a place where you can feel at home, but in a sort of cosy, elegant way that's dipped in hedonism and covered slightly with surrealism, I recommend going to NagaNaga. I am sure that if the Count of Monte Cristo had to do business in present-day Tallinn, he would do it in NagaNaga. He'd fill his stomach with chef Siim's fare, swig beer and wine, chat up the sexy, lovely barmaids and make plans to exact his revenge in a romantic candle-lit corner. Yesterday, for example, I myself went there to make plans and had a buckwheat stew on the side – it was simple, good and complemented my plans. And don't shy away from taking business lunches to NagaNaga. The day becomes night. I am still there. What's happening? It's a must visit.

Although I mainly live in London, I am NO99 restaurant's biggest fan. Every time I'm back in Estonia, it becomes my office, my leisure-time centre and my temple of culinary delights. It's perfect for all that; the atmosphere is cosy, there's enough space, the service is fast and personal, the music is good, the coffee is great and the company – colourful! A perfect place for thinking, conversing and being.
I heartily recommend trying the daily offer – good and homely food at a reasonable price, it tastes like your darling grandmother has cooked it herself. It's that familiar feeling. Everyone will find something from the main menu and, of course, I cannot overlook their home-made ice cream and sorbet selection; it always offers surprising flavour combinations.

If I have time to spare and want to quietly enjoy a dinner and a good wine, one of my frequent choices is Ribe. I especially like that the head chef can match Estonian produce with something exotic so delicately that you don't even notice at first that some of the ingredients don't even grow in Estonia. Also, the service at Ribe is my favourite because all of the staff are taking care of all the guests, so the servers always take notice of you and it's nice. And there's one more thing at Ribe, which is a rare but, for me, a very important aspect – all of the restaurant's carefully selected wines can be bought by glass to accompany the dinner. So you can pair the food with the right glass of wine – that is something you don't always find in restaurants here. I always go to Ribe if I wish to enjoy myself and I have some free time.

It's easy to choose a place to eat: first, the food has to be good, then, the service must be pleasant and fast. Number three on the list is the atmosphere. Tokumaru is the place where I have eaten the most sushi in my life, percentage wise. The Japanese head chef Daigo Takagi's recipes produce the kind of food that repeatedly brings me back. You can always count on the service. Solaris Tokumaru is a great place to catch a quick quality meal before a movie. I have frequented Vapiano for years now, mainly because the food is fresh and tasty and made quickly, and the service is pleasant and cheerful. It always happens that I am in a hurry, going from one rehearsal to another or to a performance, but I have to find time to eat in-between. Vapiano is an excellent choice for a quick quality meal so I can continue my day in a good mood. Because the pastas were my long-standing favourites, I often ate Pasta Funghi (with extra melted gorganzola cheese in the sauce) and pesto pasta with extra chicken, plenty of garlic and chilli, and some extra cream to make it more saucy. As it goes, some things you get tired of and you have to have variety in your meals too. Vapiano’s menu is big enough and changes according to seasons, so you don’t get sick of it. I am currently a fan of the salads!
