When Ephraim Winslow (Robert Pattinson) takes over the duties of a lighthouse keeper one a remote island from Thomas Wake (Willem Dafoe), he intends it to be a temporary refuge from past events. However, Wake is unable leave the island and the two men of different schools start moving in a mutual dance of life and death in a weird relationship which changes with every tide and eerie vision thrown at them by the island where not everything seems to be in order.
Robert Eggers’s second feature film “The Lighthouse” is not just a captivating psychological thriller, but an awe-inspiring study of the customs, language and appearance of the late 19th century. Similarly to his debut film “The Witch”, Eggers succeeds in creating an entirely separate world where the tonality rapidly changes from comical to tragic and horror and back again. One of the greatest film experiences of this year.
