Darkness is a mixture of genres – a thriller, a sci-fi and a family drama. It’s the story of Stella, a young girl living with her father and two little sisters in an isolated house with bolted windows. There is no sense of time or place. Is this the past? Or the future?
A solar explosion has made it impossible to go outside, food is scarce and you have to fight for survival – at least that’s what their father tells them. He leaves the house every day and returns with scraps of food. But what is really going on?
Stella grows more and more suspicious of her father’s explanations and though scared, she decides to go outside despite her father’s warnings and her sister’s pleas to stay.
Darkness is a tense and thought-provoking film, a dark feminist fairytale. The film was shot entirely on location in Turin. This marks Emanuela Rossi’s directing debut and in it she creates a unique world filled with both terror and joy. This is a story of growing up and becoming a woman that offers no easy answers, yet still gives hope.
